Victoria Wise Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Victoria Rosanna Wise, affectionately known as Vicky, who passed away just before Christmas in Salmon Arm at the age of 41.

Born and raised in Salmon Arm, Vicky’s life was far from ordinary. Shaped by early medical challenges that left her wheelchair-bound, blind, and non-verbal; yet, despite these challenges, Vicky lived a life filled with love, joy, and incredible beauty. Her resilience and spirit touched the hearts of all who knew her, and her presence brought happiness to those around her.

Vicky grew up in the loving care of two foster families who adored her and treated her as their own. At a young age, she was placed with Bert and Lou Shartner, who lovingly cared for her until she was 15. When they could no longer physically provide the care she needed, Vicky moved into the home of James and Juanita Fergusson, where she remained for the rest of her life. For over 26 years, the Fergussons and their children cherished Vicky as a beloved member of their family.

Music was Vicky’s greatest joy; she loved attending local music festivals and always had music playing. She also had a special fondness for birds and the outdoors, trips to the beach, and long car drives. The Fergusson family regularly cared for other foster children, many babies, and it always brought a smile to Vicky's face when she could hear the little ones laughing, talking and even crying. Despite her limitations, the Fergusson's ensured she lived a full and vibrant life. She travelled to Vancouver regularly, had an amazing adventure driving across Canada, delighted in visits to restaurants, and even enjoyed "watching" sports with Jim. Although it wasn't always easy to navigate, Vicky was part of the family and always "came along for the ride."

Those who knew Vicky will remember her laugh. It came at the most unexpected times, always lighting up the room and bringing smiles to those around her. Her laugh was a reflection of her indomitable spirit and her ability to spread joy, even in challenging circumstances.

In the months leading up to her passing, Vicky seemed brighter and more vibrant than ever, a cherished gift to her loved ones. Her sudden passing, caused by an unforeseen blood clot, was a heartbreaking loss.

Vicky is deeply missed by her foster parents, James and Juanita Fergusson, and their children, Alicia and Annie, Kylee Howard and her family, and Tyler Fergusson and his family. Her memory will also be held dear by the many friends and community members whose lives she touched.

Her ashes will be laid to rest in Salmon Arm Cemetery, a place close to the community that knew and loved her.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to charities supporting individuals with disabilities or local music programs.
