Thomas "Tom" Hill Obituary

It is with sadness that we say our final goodbyes to our father and grandfather, Thomas (Tom) Harry Hill. Tom passed away at Hillside Village long-term care home in Salmon Arm, BC on November 24, 2025 at the age of 81. Tom was born in Trail, BC to Joe and Helen Hill, the fifth of seven children, and was raised in the Trail area, growing up with his siblings in Warfield. After graduating high school, he trained as a bricklayer and stone mason, and later as a carpenter, and was employed by Cominco in Trail and Kimberley, BC, for most of his working life. Tom was married to Linda from 1967 to 2001, raising their two kids Vicki and Kevin in Trail and then Kimberley, enjoying family life in the outdoors, hiking, fishing and cross-country skiing. Tom was community oriented, giving his time as a volunteer firefighter in Trail and boy scouts leader in Kimberley. In his younger years he often had woodworking projects underway and made lovely items for his kids.

In 1992, Tom and Linda returned to the West Kootenays to live in Castlegar, BC. As a dedicated tradesperson, Tom retired from Teck-Cominco at the age of 65 and remained on the roster of the Castlegar local carpenters’ union and signed up for jobs as he chose for another few years. He enjoyed hiking and huckleberry picking with his friend Dorothy. Grandpa Tom was generous with his three granddaughters, enjoyed their visits and always liked to hear stories about their latest adventures. In later life, Tom’s health was impacted by diabetes, weakened kidneys and osteoarthritis. In the last year his mobility decreased rapidly, and he quickly transitioned from home care supports, to care in the Trail hospital for a couple months, and his final weeks in Hillside Village long-term care in Salmon Arm where he was closer to Kevin and his partner Trish.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hillside Village for their care and compassion. Tom is survived by his daughter Vicki of Toronto, Ontario; son Kevin (Trish) of Sorrento, BC; and granddaughters Olivia, Linnea and Caelie. He is also survived by his youngest brother Don of Grand Forks, BC. Tom was predeceased by his parents Joe and Helen, and siblings Marilyn, Ken, Sheila, Fern and Annie.

A memorial service will be held later in Spring 2026 for family and friends to gather and celebrate Tom’s life. Bowers Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. As an expression of sympathy, please consider a donation in memory of Tom to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
