Steve Hautala Obituary

Steve, a beloved father, partner, brother, and friend, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 56 on May 20, 2023, at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on January 11, 1967, in Golden, B.C., Steve was the youngest of four boys born to Sylvia and William Hautala.

Steve, also known as "Hooter,"  was known as an easygoing guy with an incredible sense of humor, an infectious smile, and always ready to tell a good joke—or two.

He grew up on the North Bench and formed lifelong bonds with his childhood friends. In 1984, at the age of 17, Steve was in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in a broken neck. Doctors were uncertain if he would walk again. But the determination and stubbornness we all knew and loved in Steve carried him through. He spent months in Foothills Hospital, ultimately proving the doctors wrong.

From the late 1980s through 2009, Steve became a well-known and respected mechanic. He began his career at S&S Industries, and after it closed, he continued his work at Motortech.

In 2009, Steve began experiencing complications from his previous neck injury, and in 2010, he underwent a 14-hour surgery. Once again, his stubbornness and determination saw him through, but sadly it marked the end of his career as a mechanic. The friendships and memories he made with his co-workers were something he always cherished.

Steve had a deep love for motorbikes, fishing, camping, music—and most of all, his daughter Cassie, who brought immeasurable happiness to his life. Even after his career ended, his passion for tinkering, woodworking, and mechanics never faded. He was always ready to lend a helping hand or share a piece of advice. He also loved playing pool, darts, and sharing stories with friends over a cold beer.

Steve is survived by his loving partner and best friend of 35 years, Tina; his cherished daughter, Cassie; his brothers Rick and Dan (Linda); and his nieces Nicole, Kierra, Shelby, Jenny, and Tamara.

He was predeceased by his parents, Sylvia and William Hautala; his brother Gord; sister-in-law Sue; and nephew Mike.

A celebration of Steve’s life was held on June 2, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. at the Seniors Center.

Steve will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
