Stefan "Gary" Bjarnason Obituary

Stefan Edgar Bjarnason, affectionately known as Gary or “BJ,” passed away on November 23, 2025, at the age of 85 surrounded by family. He was born on September 22, 1940, in Gimli, Manitoba, to Sigurjon (John) Bjarnason and Sigrún (Runa) Bardarson.

Gary was predeceased by his parents, John and Runa, his brother Dallas, and his sister Ruth. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 57 years, Sheila; his daughter Runa (Bob) Wilson; his son James; two cherished grandchildren, Viktor and Will Wilson; and his sister Margret Bjarnason. He is also remembered fondly by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

After John returned from overseas in 1946, the Bjarnason family moved west to Parson, BC, where Gary spent his formative years and was in the last graduating class of the Parson Elementary Secondary School. Later, the family settled in Golden, BC, where Gary built a life rooted in education, community, and family.

Gary attended the University of British Columbia, earning a Bachelor of Science and a Teaching Certificate. He began his teaching career at Golden Secondary School in 1969, where he taught Chemistry, Earth Science, and Math until his retirement in 2000. Known for his enthusiasm and love of science, Gary delighted students with experiments that often went “boom,” leaving lasting memories—like the famous Pringles container and ceiling tile story. In 1992, he earned his Master’s degree in Administration and Curriculum from Gonzaga University.

Beyond the classroom, Gary was deeply committed to his community. A proud member of the Golden & District Lions Club since 1972, he became a Life Member and dedicated countless hours to initiatives such as Snow-A-Rama, the Lions CNIB Golf Tournament, and the BC Lion’s Society for Children with Disabilities (Easter Seals). He also served on the board of Durand Manor, personally helping lay paving bricks for its walkway.

Gary’s love for sports and recreation was evident in his passion for golf and curling. A founding member of the Golden Golf Club, he purchased a 50-year membership and served as a board director. He also curled for many years, sharing his patience and humor with teammates and even teaching Sheila the game.

His leadership extended to financial stewardship as well—Gary served on the Columbia Valley Credit Union Board from 1969 to 2001, 2002-2005 including multiple terms as Director and two as President.

Gary will be remembered for his generosity, sense of humor, and unwavering dedication to family, students, and community. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched through teaching, service, and friendship.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Lion’s Society for Children with Disabilities (Easter Seals).
