Siegfried passed away peacefully on the evening of January 12, 2025, at the Ivy House in Invermere, with his beloved wife of almost 55 years by his side.
Born in 1937, in Glambach, Silesia, in the eastern part of Germany, Siegfried experienced the tumultuous aftermath of World War II, relocating with his family to western Germany. In 1963, he embarked on a new chapter, immigrating with his parents to Canada to follow in the footsteps of his brother Alfred and his uncle, Joe Roesch.
Siegfried initially worked in logging camps in northern British Columbia before purchasing his cherished Sunny Bench Ranch in 1965. In 1969, he returned to Germany for a visit, where he met Klara and returned with her to the Valley. They married in 1970 and as newlyweds lived in the teacherage beside the old Brisco school. In 1973, he bought his father’s farm, where he and Klara raised their family and Charolais cattle. He lived there happily for 46 years before selling the farm and retiring to Radium. Despite retirement, he remained active, often driving up to Sunny Bench to cut wood in the bush, where he felt truly at peace.
He was known for his love of history and geography, spending hours poring over biographies and maps, watching soccer, touring farms in other countries and driving along the backroads of the Purcell Range.
He is survived by his wife, Klara; his three children, Gudrun (Max), Brigitte, and Carl (Rachel); his grandchildren, Mario, Annecy and Nevara; and his sister, Krimhilde. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilhelm and Anna, and his brother, Alfred.
Funeral services are under the direction of Hindman-Bowers Funeral Home, Golden, BC.
A funeral service will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Radium, BC, on Wednesday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m.
