Richard Omer Sim, aged 73, of Salmon Arm, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2026, surrounded by love and family.
Born in Revelstoke and raised in Solsqua, Richard grew up with a deep connection to the Shuswap that remained with him throughout his life. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree along with a teaching certificate from Simon Fraser University. This led to a dedicated career spanning more than 30 years as a teacher.
Richard taught in elementary and secondary schools across northern British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and the Interior, often in remote and underserved communities. He specialized in alternate education, designing hands-on learning experiences that included outdoor activities, bike rides and woodworking projects. Richard believed in meeting kids where they were at. Through patience, creativity, and genuine care, he changed the lives of many children. At various times, he also worked in carpentry.
An avid athlete, Richard loved running, cross-country skiing, and cycling. He competed in the BC Seniors Games in track and cycling events, ran several marathons, and helped organize local cross-country races. Richard also enjoyed poetry, reading, singing and gardening. He had a gentle, reflective nature that extended to a deep love for animals - especially birds and cats.
Above all, Richard was a selfless, generous, and hard-working man. He was a loving partner and a devoted father who raised three daughters. He will be remembered for his gentle kindness, quiet strength, and the positive impact he had on so many lives.
Richard was predeceased by his late wife Maureen, his parents Merle and Murray Sim, and his brother Gerald. He is survived by his loving partner Deni; his daughters Meryn, Emmy, and Glynis; his brother Jim; and many extended family members and friends.
There will be no public memorial service at this time. The family appreciates the many expressions of support and kindness during this difficult period.
