Peter Budda Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Joseph Budda, a beloved husband, father, teacher, and friend, who left us on November 3, 2024, at the age of 81, after a courageous battle with numerous health issues.

Born on July 16, 1943, in Pincher Creek, Alberta, Peter was the youngest of four children born to Joseph and Ellen Budda. He grew up with his siblings Josephine, Julius, and Joan, who shared many memories of their childhood together. After high school, Peter attended Notre Dame Seminary in Nelson (now known as the College of the Rockies) for a year before transferring to St. Augustine’s Seminary in Scarborough, Ontario, where he spent three years in study.

Following the death of his beloved mother Ellen, Peter made the decision to step away from the path toward the priesthood, realizing that his true calling lay in teaching. He returned to the West Coast, where he became part of Simon Fraser University’s first graduating class, later obtaining his teaching certificate at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

It was during his time at UBC that Peter met his wife, Cilla and after getting married, moved to Salmon Arm, where Peter began his teaching career at JL Jackson Junior High School, teaching English. He would go on to spend the majority of his career at Salmon Arm Senior Secondary, retiring after 32 years, having taught English and History. Throughout his tenure, Peter made a profound impact on students and colleagues alike, known for his creative teaching methods, sharp wit, and a deep commitment to fostering critical thinking and empathy.

Peter—affectionately known as Mr. B by his students—devoted over thirty years to teaching, leaving a lasting impact on generations of young minds. His commitment to education went far beyond the classroom and the pages of textbooks. A passionate admirer of Shakespeare, Peter memorized many of the Bard’s plays and often brought them to life with impassioned recitations, igniting a deeper love for literature in his students. Outside of teaching, he was actively involved in extracurriculars like the debate club, badminton team, and Amnesty International, where he championed social justice causes. His unwavering dedication to fostering critical thinking and compassionate action inspired countless students to pursue careers in education, law, and social advocacy.

Known for his sharp wit and wicked sense of humor—traits inherited by his daughters and grandchildren—Peter’s playful spirit endeared him to everyone who knew him. Outside of teaching, Peter was a loyal friend and an engaged member of his community. He volunteered with local organizations such as Shuswap Theatre, the 5th Avenue Seniors Activity Centre, and the Shuswap Society for Arts and Culture. He had a deep love for sports, particularly baseball, hockey, golf, fishing, football and bridge.

Peter is survived by his wife of 55 years, Cilla Budda; his daughters, Phaedra (Ivan), Sarah, and his grandchildren, Alex, Mairin (Bradley), Izabelle and Dylan. He is also survived by his sister Joan of New Westminster, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Weicker and his staff, the staff at the dialysis clinics in Kelowna and Vernon, as well as the first responders who attended the night of Peter’s passing. A sincere thank you to the friends of the Budda family who offered their support over the past six months as Peter's health declined.

A formal memorial service will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Salmon Arm at 10:30 a.m. sharp, followed by a Celebration of Life at the Salmar Classic Theatre at 1 p.m. Friends, former students, and family are all invited to gather to honor Peter’s extraordinary life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Shuswap Community Foundation or the Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap Society.

Peter’s life was defined by his deep commitment to teaching, his boundless sense of humor, and his selfless service to others. His legacy will continue to inspire and enrich all those fortunate enough to have known him. He will be missed beyond measure, but never forgotten.
