Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Olympe Astra on Thursday, April 24, with family by his side. It's so difficult to say goodbye to a legend of a man!
Olympe was born November 17, 1938 in Revelstoke, BC, and raised at 12 Mile. He met and married the woman of his dreams, Joan Astra (Reedman) on July 18, 1959.
Olympe was a master of many trades with a wide range of personal interests. He was skilled in trades such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanics, welding and metal works. He would lend a hand to anyone in need and help neighbours and friends with difficult projects.
Olympe's legacy is one of love and humour. Together with Joan, they nurtured a large family and many foster children.
Olympe had the first garbage contract and first real garbage truck in Revelstoke. He worked on the Mica Dam project with his "Super Digger" machine, managed his own paving company under Olympe Astra Excavating, and was an Oiler on the Galena Bay Ferry. As a Toastmaster member, he taught the Expo 86 Tourism Course. Many know him from the Little Theatre Group where he acted, constructed sets and directed. Olympe was a Revelstoke City Councillor from 1997 to 1999. He was passionate beekeeper, taught the beekeeping course and spun-out delicious honey. Mount Mackenzie and Revelstoke Mountain witnessed Olympe on the ski slopes until he was 80 years old. In the woods, he would haul out logs for firewood, pick huckleberries, fish and just dig around. Olympe loved the outdoors!
Survived by his wife and love of his life; Joan, his daughters; Yvette, Tammy, Janene, Miranda, Cassandra and Renee, his sons; Blaine, Leonard, Owden and Hayden, and all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Olympe leaves behind beloved family members that are too numerous to list. He was called Dad, Grandpa and Ole by many others who were welcomed into Joan and Olympe's family.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the nurses and doctors at Queen Victoria Hospital in Revelstoke for their exceptional care and kindness, not only to Olympe, but his whole family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a small contribution to Joan and Olympe's beloved dog, Coco, who requires veterinary surgery. Donations can be made directly to the Revelstoke Veterinary Clinic, in person or e-transfer: reception@revelstokevet.com ("Donation for Coco Astra" in note section).
On June 13th, Olympe will be laid to rest at the Mountain View Cemetery with his father.
