Nelson Eric Stromgren passed away peacefully at the age of 87, just ten days shy of his 88th birthday. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his children: Douglas Stromgren of Kelowna, and Christopher Stromgren (Jennifer) of Salmon Arm; by his five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; by his brother Brian Stromgren (Fay) of White Rock; and his sister Sandra Albo (Jerry) of Osoyoos.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Barbara Joan Stromgren (née Greening); his son, Gregory John Stromgren; his grandson, Gregory Louis Stromgren; and his brother, Sidney Stromgren (Leah).
Nelson had a fulfilling 25-year career as an instructor at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) School of Business, where he inspired countless students with his dedication and knowledge. His lifelong love of the sea began with his time in the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and continued with cherished memories aboard the family sailboat Vänskap.
In retirement, Nelson and Joan returned to their roots in the Okanagan Valley, where he gave generously of his time through volunteer work with the Okanagan College Alumni Association and the Westbank Citizens Patrol. His quiet leadership, sharp intellect, and enduring sense of service touched many lives.
A memorial service to celebrate Nelson’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on August 6, 2025, at the Cathedral Church of St. Michael & All Angels in Kelowna, B.C.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson Society British Columbia or to The Cathedral Church of St. Michael & All Angels.
