Louise was known to many people through the different passions she followed throughout her life. She was known for playing and coaching many different sports. She was an avid bowler in her youth and played grass hockey and basketball. As a softball player Louise moved from catcher to first base and then to short stop. She also played hockey and coached and refereed ringette until her hip replacement had her hang up her skates.
Louise and Jim are very proud of the years they spent as Recreation Site Hosts at Sugar Lake. Louise took no misbehaviour from her campers and enjoyed seeing them return year after year to enjoy the lake. She would describe the sites in passionate detail, so each camper got their perfect campsite. She loved to tell the story about the time she extinguished a potential forest fire.
In the off season, Louise and Jim enjoyed time with friends in Yuma. It was there where Louise was never cold. It was also there she really began to explore her talent as a quilter. She enjoyed making placemats and quilts and had a talent for putting colours and patterns together. Louise also returned to knitting as a hobby. She was able to use patterns as a guide and could alter and adapt the “on the fly.” It was finally with great encouragement that she began to make sweaters for herself.
Louise was never one to back down from a challenge, in 2014 she began to struggle with some unexplained health symptoms.
After many tests and medical appointments, Louise was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension and Scleroderma. Treatment involved Louise being connected to her pump 24 hours a day to provide the medicine to treat her condition. This did not stop her from travelling to warmer climates for the winter and running the Sugar Lake Recreation Site until the end of the 2018 season.
Mom passed away after a brief hospital stay. We are grateful that her and my Dad had recently sold their house and become settled in Canterbury Court.
Our family cannot thank Mom’s care team including Lisa Kolkman her Nurse Practitioner and Dr. Nathan Bruner.
