Kurt Meier

It is with heavy hearts that our family has to say goodbye to our dad, Opa, Tiki Opa, and Tiki-Tiki Opa.

Kurt was born in Hamburg Germany, the eldest child of Bertha (nee Buchner)1904-1997 - and Heinrich Meier -1900-1947.Kurt’s siblings followed – Bernd, Heidi, and Hans – who passed away at just 1 month old -1946

Kurt was just 11 years old when his father passed away.

Kurt studied a trade in Germany, and met his wife to be, Elfriede, at a dance

Post war Germany offered little opportunity for young men – and he was made aware of a chance to immigrate to other countries – with the promise of a better future. He really wanted to go to Australia – but the minimum age to go there was 25 – so he opted to come to Canada.

He accepted the sponsorship from the church, came to Canada in 1955 – at the age of 20, settling in Vancouver BC. The church then sponsored Kurt’s fiancé Elfriede to join him in 1956, and they married – and had 3 children – Diana, Norbert, and Cara.

Kurt and Elfriede carved out a life for their family – working hard to get ahead. Kurt worked for multiple different companies in his lifetime – eventually opening a machine shop with his brother, Bernd, who had also immigrated to Canada. The family learned and enjoyed many activities together, Kurt became part of Grandview Minor Hockey Association, where he coached and umpired minor hockey. He also became an active member (and executive) of the Vancouver Alpen Club and was on the board of directors for the Edelweiss/Prospera Credit Union

The family lived in Vancouver until 1976 and then moved to Coquitlam, where he met many new friends and neighbours

His wife Elfriede passed away in December of 2021.

In 2023 – at the age of 88 – Kurt came to visit Salmon Arm with his daughter; he fell in love with the city and the lifestyle – and promptly sold his home in Coquitlam and in January of 2024 moved to Salmon Arm. He was very happy in Salmon Arm – enjoyed the friendliness of the residents and was blessed with wonderful neighbours.

Kurt passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026 at Salmon Arm Hospital

Kurt is pre-deceased by his parents, wife Elfriede, brothers Bernd (in 2022) and Hans ,grandson Kent Mantler (in 2024.)

He is survived by his children, Diana Mantler,Harris,Meier, Norbert Meier, and Cara Schulz (Wally), nephew Michael Meier (Alison) Bernd’s spouse Nancy Atwood, and in Germany, sister Heidi Vollstaedt (Juergan), nieces Britta Heitmann (Oliver )and Birgit Volstaedt (Frank)and their families

Grandchildren: Danella Roddick, Julianne Mantler, Mark Mantler (Heather), Corrina Joyce (Chris), Reannan Mantler, Trevor Schulz

Great Grandchildren: Sorcha Leah Mantler, Devon Mantler, Makaila Mantler McCullum, Sophia Evangalista, Ciara Joyce

Great Great Grandson: Noah Arellano

A celebration of life will be held at Cornerstone Church 2151 11 Avenue NE in Salmon Arm, on August 29,2026 at 2pm followed by refreshments at Kurt’s Home.

An additional celebration of life will be held in Vancouver – date to be determined, for friends and family unable to attend in Salmon Arm.
