Joyce (Mudiman) Dorey

Joyce was born on July 9, 1928, to Eva Robert and Albert Mudiman in Fort MacLeod, Alberta. She died in Salmon Arm, BC on August 17, 2026 at the age of 98.

She grew up in the Peace River country and then Whitehorse, YT with her parents, older sister Ruth and younger brother David. She shared many fond memories of her childhood in the North. As a teenager she went away to school in Alberta.

Joyce then returned to Whitehorse where she met the love of her life, Bill Dorey. They were married on May 28th, 1948.  They had two sons, Steve and David and, as a military family, moved frequently, living across Canada and in Germany. Joyce often spoke about her responsibilities “for the next move” during their 26 years of marriage.

She moved to Salmon Arm in 1974. Bill died suddenly soon after, so she went to work as a high school secretary. She then decided to fulfill her lifelong dream of going to art school. She graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design in 1981. She began painting abstracts before she decided that what she loved painting the most was flowers from her garden and local landscapes. Over the next 40 years she was an active member of the Salmon Arm art community.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Bill and her sons Steve and Dave. Left to remember her strong will, independence and sense of humour is her granddaughter, Tanya, her 5 great-grandchildren, her niece and nephew, Katrina and Paul and her many lifelong friends.

A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held on September 19th, 2026, at First United Church (Village Hall) from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the local NDP or a charity of your choice.
