It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we announce that John (Jack) William Carten passed away peacefully on September 17, 2026 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 99 years. Jack was born on April 2, 1927 in Revelstoke, BC to Gerald and Eva Carten.
Jack is survived by his two children, Wayne (Joan) and Shelley (Jim) Olson; two granddaughters, Jacqueline and Nicole Carten; and his great granddog, Spud. Jack was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Florence, in 2013. He was also predeceased by his only brother, Gerald (Mable), and niece, Julie (Lorne).
Jack worked for CP Rail for 42.5 years, first hired on as a call boy at 16 years old. His career transitioned to a checker in the yard and then finally to a conductor until retiring in September 1985.
Jack was a Legion member and had many good times with friends at the weekly Legion meat draws (and some days in between) exchanging hunting and fishing stories. He was a member of the Elks and also the Rod and Gun club (since 1944), devoting countless volunteer hours to all these clubs. He helped establish the Bridge Creek and Moses Creek spawning channels and cleaned out other creeks to enable the fish to get back upstream.
Jack had 2 granddaughters who affectionately called him Papa. He helped them build many Elementary School projects when they were young, leveraging his well stacked tool shed of collectables. They remember him tap dancing in the kitchen while rigatoni cooked in the oven.
Throughout his journey of 99 years, he developed many close friendships in Revelstoke and he cherished them all. He lived a long and happy life and was always there to lend a hand to others. He leaves behind special friends Bev, Valerie and Lovely in Calgary as well.
Jack was a fisherman, hunter, boater, gardener, curler and golfer, but above all a great husband, father and grandfather.
He will be greatly missed and forever loved.
Cheers Dad/Papa, we love you!
A Celebration of Life is planned for the Spring in Revelstoke.
