It is with great sadness and much love that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandma, Yeriko (Jeanne) Hiraoka on Sunday, October 15, 2023.
Jeanne was the youngest of four children, born on November 21, 1926 in Vancouver, B.C. to Tasoji and Teru Umakoshi. In 1942, Jeanne spent four years in an internment camp with her mother and two sisters near Slocan, B.C. Regardless of the hardships endured, it was a memorable time of her life.
She met Kiyoshi (Roy) in Thunder Bay and they married on September 3, 1949. After the birth of their daughter, they moved to Winnipeg in 1950 and had four sons. In the earlier years, she spent her time sewing, crocheting and knitting outfits for her children. Jeanne loved to cook, especially for New Year’s, and entertained friends and Roy’s co-workers with a delicious Japanese meal. This tradition of New Year’s dinners continued throughout Jeanne’s life and created many fond memories.
Jeanne enjoyed spending time with her close friends and travelling with her family. As her years progressed, Jeanne was a quiet and reserved lady who maintained her standards and always looked and dressed her best.
Jeanne was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brother Johnny, and her sisters Margaret and Betty.
Jeanne treasured, loved and cared for her family. She is survived by her children, Elaine (George), Rick (Hue), Ken (Gloria), Terry (Cheryl), and Jody (Michele). Her grandchildren, Cory, Tanis (Darryl), Kyle (Angie), Paige, Eriko (Colby), Josh, Kai, Vivian and Anthony, and her great grandchildren Taylor, Danae (Levi), Shaylynn, Brady and Savanna.
The family would like to thank Dr. Clark, the home care staff, as well as those at Durand Manor and particularly the nurses that cared for her in her final days at the hospital.
Respecting Jeanne’s wishes, there will only be a small graveside gathering with her immediate family.
