Jean Abbott Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce our mother, Jean Margaret (Allen) Abbott, spent her last day with us on October 17, 2024, just shy of what would have been her 101st  birthday.

She was predeceased by her husband and soul mate, Donald, and her brothers Wilson, Harold and Norman.  She is survived by her son Lance (Carole) , daughter Jeanne (Larry), grandson Russell, as well as her sisters Colleen, Joan and Janet, and brother Daniel.

Mom was born in Westlock, Alberta on December 14, 1923.    Family was all important to Mom, especially her Alberta brothers and sisters and their families.  She was a kind and gentle grandmother, and a favourite aunt to many nieces and nephews.  As a mother, she was caring and supportive.   She was always selflessly aware of others needs.  As a result, Mom was cherished by her family, her friends and those who met her only recently. As a wife, she was the perfect companion to Dad, each complementing the other's endeavours. She was a smart, creative and resourceful partner. She had a quick wit and some very good comebacks.  Dad built boats and houses, motorhomes and converted highway coaches, Mom was right there with him making sails, upholstery and furnishings, all while cooking delicious meals and hosting friends who came to visit.  Whatever the endeavour, they both read up on it and made it happen.   They travelled in Europe in their early years while Dad was in the Air Force, then were transferred to Ottawa where they lived for about 13 years.  Mom worked full time at the Scotia Bank until they moved to Chase, then Sorrento, BC. in 1969.    While in Ottawa, summer weekends involved camping or cottaging, an idyllic childhood when one looks back on it, and in their retirement years they toured mostly around California and Arizona, making lasting friendships.   The Shuswap at Sorrento was their summer and winter home when not travelling until they moved to Salmon Arm in 2007.   Mom lost her soul mate in spring 2008, but she remained involved and active while missing him greatly.   She had her own hobbies of music, knitting and sewing and we have many items she made that we will always cherish.   She lived by her mantra, be nice to each other.    Let’s face it, she was a pretty wonderful lady.  Her presence will be greatly missed but she deserves a good rest now.

We would like to thank Dr. Amy Meghasey and Picadilly Care Centre for their care and kindness to Mom and us.

A service is scheduled for November 16 at 2:00 pm at Bowers Funeral Service in Salmon Arm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society of BC.
