While in Creston Mike went to school he played on the basketball team, worked at the Coop general store, bought his 1st car and enjoyed the freedom that a rural location provided a young lad.

The family moved to Vancouver BC in 1960 so Mike could work as a contractor at Grainger mattress with his father John. The family moved to Richmond, where in 1963 John Gilburg was born the last of 4 children, and they raised their family until 1973.

Mike liked the contracting business so much that he started his own company Bridgeport Contractors where he installed underground services and other excavating activities.

The lure of country life brought the family to Salmon Arm in 1973 where Mike continued his excavating business and Jenny worked at Sears.
