Hertha Haslop Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hertha Haslop – our beloved mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, and friend – on October 25, 2024

Hertha was born on May 20, 1926, in Edmonton, Alberta. Shortly after World War II ended, her best friend, Vera Jackson, introduced her to a handsome Air Force pilot named George. He became the love of her life, and the two were married on November 8, 1946. Hertha and George shared 63 wonderful years together until George passed away in 2010 at the age of 89.

In 1983, Hertha and George retired to Blind Bay, where she enjoyed tending to their garden and fruit trees. They both loved square dancing and spent many happy years traveling throughout British Columbia. Their adventures extended beyond BC, taking them to the United States and Mexico in their motorhome. They also traveled with their children to destinations like Mexico, Australia, and Europe. In 2004, the couple moved to McGuire Place in Salmon Arm, where they could often be seen walking together to Tim Hortons for a coffee.

After George’s passing, Hertha continued to visit family on Vancouver Island and in Saskatchewan and Alberta. In August 2019, she moved to Lakeside Manor, where she was warmly welcomed by the friendly staff, who always stopped for a chat and made her feel at home when she returned from family visits.

Hertha is survived by her children: Ken (Bonnie-Jean) and Connie (Brian); her grandchildren: Lori-Ann (Chad), Kelly (Isaac), Jacinda (Kristjan), and Jocelyn (Kevin); and her great-grandchildren: Shaun, Riley, Tyler, Kenzie, Calina, Kai, Thora, Freyja, and Ari. She is also survived by her brother, Walter Guderjan, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Her family meant everything to her, and she cherished every opportunity to spend time with them. Although she didn’t quite reach her goal of celebrating her 100th birthday, Hertha lived a long, love-filled life that will forever be remembered.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Lakeside Manor and Shuswap Lake Hospital for their compassionate care, with special thanks to Dr. Montgomery.

Hertha will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
