Obituary

Helen (Hinke) Schaap died peacefully at her home on April 24, 2023. She was surrounded by her three daughters.  Joan Tancock-Polino (Pierre), Aida (Herb) DeRuiter and Nora (Greg) Hetland.  Along with her daughters she is survived by 10 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and two sisters.  She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years – John in 2014, a daughter, Nina (1958); a granddaughter, Stephanie (1991); son-in-law, Ron Tancock (2007); her son – Menso in 2016; and son John in 2019.  

Helen was born in Idsegahuizum, Friesland on January 16, 1923.  She celebrated her 100th birthday this year surrounded with family members and great friends.  Helen started a career of nursing in Friesland.  In 1956 Helen came to Canada to help her sister with their young children.  It was in that time she met and married her handsome life-long groom of 56 years.  Together, they raised a family while they enjoyed dairy farming. Their farming years were spent in Delta, BC and then moved their herd to Mara, BC in 1970.  In 2003, John & Helen moved to Salmon Arm celebrating retirement years together. 

Helen Schaap lived a life of gratefulness and persevering faithfulness to her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. 

A funeral service will be held at the Cornerstone Christian Reformed Church, Salmon Arm, BC on Saturday, May 13th at 1:00 pm.
