Ernie Scherck Obituary

With hearts full of love, we say goodbye to Ernie; husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He passed away peacefully at the age of 74, outside in his chair looking over a sunny “Happy Acres”.

Ernie loved and cherished both sides of his family above all else. He was predeceased by his parents Laura and Paul Scherck, his sister Vivian, and brother Phillip. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Sandy Scherck (Gulliford), his loving sons Stew, wife Sherry, their children Zyanna and Connor; Dave, wife Kellynda, their children Anika and Tanner; his brother Larry, wife Yvonne and sister Karen; along with numerous in-laws, cousins, aunts, nieces and nephews.

Ernie was born in Dawson Creek, BC. He moved to Maple Ridge when he was 15 years old. After graduating from high school, he moved on to BCIT where he earned a degree in soils technology. With his degree, he began his working career at Mica Dam. During this time, he met and married Sandy, starting his wonderful family. They moved to Castlegar where he worked on the Kootenay Canal, finally moving to Salmon Arm. There, he worked for the District of Salmon Arm as well as running a market garden with Sandy, selling organic produce. He was again able to apply his degree working on the Mount MacDonald Tunnel, then finally being able to live here at Happy Acres, working for Tech-Crete Processors until his retirement.

Ernie lived a vibrant, courageous life filled with laughter and love. He enjoyed long bike rides, afternoon walks, canoeing, camping with family and always had a book on the go.

Ernie was a true renaissance man. He was as comfortable replacing a tractor clutch as he was painting a beautiful landscape, solving complex math problems, or working in a muddy ditch. His thoughtful, measured approach to challenges and his attention to detail ensured there was no obstacle he couldn’t overcome.

He never shied away from a challenge, be it mental or physical and was a rock for everyone in his orbit. Next to his beautiful wife Sandy, gardening and working on his property were two of his greatest passions.

He will live on in the hearts of the people that were blessed to have known him.

Memorial donations can be made to the Shuswap Trail Alliance.
