Donald Wootten Obituary

On December 6, 2020, Don Wootten died peacefully at home surrounded by loving family in Salmon Arm, BC. Don was born in Bromley, UK. At 18, he was called for national service in the British Army in both Singapore and Hong Kong. At 22, Don began preaching and at 24, married Margaret (Peggy) Clancy. In 1957 they immigrated to Canada and Don attended seminary in Saskatoon. He was ordained as an Anglican Priest in Peace River, Alberta in 1960 and accepted his first parish post in Spirit River, Alberta. Daughters Johanna and Elizabeth were both born while serving Spirit River. In 1963, the family relocated to St. Matthews Mission, Fort McPherson, NWT. Daughter Susanna and son Mark were both born in the Arctic, Susanna died tragically in 1971 and the family returned to the UK, where son Martin joined the family in 1972. In 1973 the family returned to Canada where Don accepted a posting at the Parish of Macklin, Sask., and then on to St Paul’s North Battleford also in Sask. Sadly, son Mark died suddenly in 1982. Following various posts in Alberta, and promotion to Archdeacon of Prince Albert, Sask., Peggy and Don retired to Salmon Arm, BC in 1998. The retirement was brief as Don accepted appointment at St. Peter’s, Monte Creek, a position he held until 2017. Following Peggy’s peaceful death in 2008, Don found love again and married Emily Turgeon in 2011. This second union was both a surprise and delight to all the respective children noting “pep” in Don’s step and Emily’s “sparkle”. The two enjoyed numerous travels as well as quiet time in the lake-view home and garden that Don cherished.

Don is survived by wife Emily, children Johanna (Lyle), Lizzy (Peter), Marty (Lori) and grandchildren Cody (Jacklyn), Kashtin (Carly), Kairo (Aidan), Mikayla, Kaehler and was delighted by great-granddaughter Ariella. The stepchildren Jo-anna, Sarah (Mike) and step-grandkids James (Meghan), Isaac, Josie and Emma are so grateful to have also been family.

Following cremation, Don’s ashes will be interred in the family plot in North Battleford.
