David Barrett Obituary

David Leonard Barrett was born on February 22, 1949, in Trail, British Columbia, to Thomas Arthur and Grace Barrett. He was the youngest of three children, alongside his brother Wesley and sister Anne.

Dave spent his younger years swimming in the Columbia River, playing basketball in school, and helping his mother at the United Church camp outside of Nelson, BC. When he was 20, his father passed away, and his brother Wes—12 years his senior—stepped into a fatherly role, helping guide him through his early adulthood, especially during his free-spirited “hippie” years of the 1960s and ’70s. During that time, Dave and his friends made a memorable trip to California in a Volkswagen bus in search of the “California girl,” though they never quite found her.

In 1969, Dave began his career with CP Rail in Nelson as a dispatcher. Over the years, he held many roles, including conductor, engineer, road manager, and finally his favourite position as a rules instructor, which he held until his retirement.

Music was Dave’s true passion. He played in numerous community bands throughout the province and also led his own band, The Swing Monkeys. He cherished attending band camps with his good friend Dennis. Dave loved brass instruments—especially the trombone, tuba, and euphonium. In addition to music, he enjoyed fishing, calligraphy, and reading.

Dave met the love of his life, Judy, in 1984 in Nelson, BC, through friends at the Hume Hotel. They were married in 1986 and later moved to Revelstoke in 1988 for work, where they built their life together. Dave loved taking Judy fishing and camping, sharing many happy years outdoors.

One year after his retirement, Dave was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He lived with the illness for many years with resilience and determination. As the disease progressed and his motor skills declined, his final years became increasingly challenging. Despite facing difficulties with things many of us take for granted, Dave never complained and took it all in stride—in true Dave fashion. He understood that life could be cruel and chose not to let it get the better of him.

Dave was predeceased by his father Arthur, his mother Grace, his brother Wes, and his sister Anne.

Dave is lovingly remembered by his wife Judy; his children Seth, Kelsey (Adam), and Sean (Molly); his four granddaughters, Quilla, Pollie, Karsyn, and Cora, whom he adored deeply; and his special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported Dave throughout his journey with Parkinson’s. Special thanks to Dr. Hunt, the staff at Mount Cartier Court for their exceptional care, and the teams in acute care and the emergency department at Queen Victoria Hospital. Sincere appreciation as well to Teresa, Dennis, and all others who offered their support along the way.

At Dave’s request, there will be no formal funeral. The family would like to thank everyone who has reached out at this time.
