Beverley Shehovac Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that I let Bev's friends and community know of her passing on May 23rd with family by her side.

Bev's medical challenges started in 2017 and they slowly took away her quality of life, especially in the last two months. Bev made the brave decision that it was time and prepared us for her passing.

A celebration of life will take place on July 19 at 2 pm at the Golden Rec Plex. Bev was very much in charge and gave clear instructions that it is to be a celebration of her life. There are many people to thank and I will do so later, however I would like to take this time to thank Judy Doyle who has assisted Bev and I on this journey. Judy and I were present with Bev when she provided celebration of life instructions. Bev comments, "I want balloons". I looked at Bev and responded "balloons?" I glanced over at Judy and I got the stern stare that no doubt Judy's husband receives at time and said "ok you got balloons". Bev carries on "I want Disney music". I look over at Judy, "ok you got Disney music". Bev was a big fan of Disney, having been to Disney Land and Disney World 10 times. She loved Disney music. Yesterday when Dr Tan learned this, he excused himself and he returned with a Mini Mouse Balloon, tied it to Bev's bed and brought in a speaker and played Disney Music. Bev had a good laugh.

Bev made many sacrifices for my career advancement during our many transfers and was always being able to change her career. I told Bev that when it was time to retire, she was in charge to advise where we would settle down. She made it clear that Golden is her home where she finally set roots.

Pero and I stressed to Bev as she always expressed concerns for us after her passing that we would be ok. I repeated to her numerous time "Pero and I will be ok, just know that." Bev passed knowing she was loved by many and will be missed.

As a youth Bev was involved with Job's Daughters and when she aged out continued to be very much involved mentoring young ladies. In 1990 Bev was the Grand Guardian of Job's Daughter for BC/Yukon and travelled to each Bethal in her jurisdiction.

Bev also was a member of Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron for a number of years in Golden. She was also a member of Chapters in Rossland and Enderby.
Bev also became the treasurer for the local Jr Hockey team the Golden Jr Rockets joining Marko in his passion volunteering with the hockey club.

Bev's main hobby was her craft work having completed many quilts for family members. Bev also enjoyed doing needle point and completed her last project days before she passed away.

Bev enjoyed every trip to Disney Land and Disney World. She had a great time at a fly in fish camp in Saskatchewan catching the largest pike for the week when we were there.

Most important to Bev is her in lieu of flowers request.

Bev spent a great deal of time away from Golden during her illness. ICU in both Cranbrook and Kelowna. Bev and I experienced the financial demand many families face. Bev and I were fortunate to have friends in both communities and fortunate to have the finances. Many others may not be so fortunate. At the time of Bev's stay in Kelowna Joe Anna's House was a dream and funds were being raised. Joe Anna's House is similar to McDonalds house and provides affordable housing for families. Bev and I having experienced the challenge were asked to be spokes persons where we were able to tell Bev's story. Bev initiated monthly automatic donations to JoeAnna's House. Donations to JoeAnna’s house can be made online at JoeAnna's House | We Are Better Together.

Second in lieu of flowers is the Golden Rockets Community Fund. For several years our business community sponsors a third jersey we call our community jersey which is worn for a month. At the end the jersey's are sold/auctioned off and the funds raised goes into a community fund. When the Rockets organization learns of a family that has medical challenges in our community involving travel the Rockets are able to draw from this fund to assist with costs. Helps with travel, hotel and meals. Bev being part of the Rocket's organization was very proud that the Rockets she was part of are able to give back to the community. Donations can be sent to treasurer@goldenrockets.com with a note Community fund in memory of Bev Shehovac.

The third in lieu of flowers is the H.I.K.E Fund Canada, which provides hearing or assistive listening devices to children in need. Donations can be made online at Donate - HIKE Fund Canada - Helping Kids Hear The World.

I tried to convince Bev to a fourth in lieu of flowers to Marko's fishing fund but that got nixed. Can't blame a guy for trying.

My family thanks our medical staff, ambulance, fire rescue and home care workers that showed a great deal of compassion, love and care shown to Bev.
