Arthur "Art" Callaghan Obituary

Arthur (Art) Floyd Callaghan Its with a heavy heart we say goodbye to our father Art who passed away suddenly on August 13, 2024 at the age of 92 after a long and fulfilling life. Art was born in Loyalist Alberta November 6, 1931 and moved to McBride with his parents Dennis and Elizabeth plus 7 other brothers and 4 sisters. Art was the last of this surviving family. Art “the Irishman” married the love of his life Ila Fuglem February 1951 and raised 4 children in McBride. Living in McBride they were surrounded by family and friends and enjoyed many gatherings, dances and music in the back yard. Dad loved his old time Country music. Art worked for the Dept. of Highways and operated various heavy equipment. He had may stories about snowfalls. One was of walking the plank on the Frazier River bridge to pack the kids to their parents from the school bus and the bridge was partially washed away. Another was running a huge snow blower and had a gut feeling when blowing snow from a section of a street. Stopped, walked around to find kids tunnelling into the snow bank on the other side. From then on he wouldn’t run the machine unless he had a spotter. After the kids all graduated they moved to Loos, BC and started there new adventures of enjoying back country horseback riding, hunting, trapping and farming 400 acres while still traveling to McBride for work till he retired in 1986. 1995 they moved to Chase and claimed they were no longer Loos’ers but Chas’ers. Ila was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and needed more care so moved her into Mt Ida Mews. After traveling back and forth to Salmon Arm he decided to sell and move closer to be with her. Landers Lodge became his home in 2016 then and was till the end. He loved to tease the ladies and they gave it right back with a smile. Art had many family and friends stop in to visit him and loved every moment that he spent with people. You could always find him in his recliner in his room with the TV on and watching old time movies. We can’t thank the staff at Landers Lodge enough for watching over dad, spoiling him with anything choc and just making it feel like home. Art is survived by his children Lucille Mintz (Dale), sons Robert Callaghan (Heather) and Michael Callaghan (Carol), son-in-law Art Cochrane, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Predeceased by his wife Ila Callaghan, daughter Marilyn Cochrane, and grandson Garrett Callaghan. There will be a Celebration of life at a later date.
